    Budget Rallycross suspension?

    Is there such a thing?

I want to stiffen up the ride a bit on my 98 wagon before my rallycross event at the end of this month. I was wondering if anyone has any tips and or suggestions on setting this thing up for some fun in the dirt. My thoughts are a set of cheapy adjustable springs at or around stock ride height with the KYB's that are currently in there and a set of new Dunlop Graspic snow tires I have mounted on 14 inch steelies (175's).

I'm not tryign to get crazy with it, but I would like the car to be soem what responsive and not feel like I just took grandmas escort out for a ride through a corn field.

    Thanks in advance

ask anyone who rallys, swaybars are your enemy

so they rely on spring stiffness alone eh? saybars limit your suspension travel i know that much.

you want as much grip as possible on non paved roads and swaybars cause lift on the outside wheels

I totally agree. with uneven surfaces, you need to keep as much tire in the dirt as possible at all times. disconnect the sways, and use every ounce of body-roll that you can. because while your body is rolling, your tires are digging and turning. If you have too stiff of springs, you'll end up with your inside tire bouncing a bunch, and throwing off your steering.

I've got a rallyX coming up soon too, I'm just not sure if I'll be able to make it due to other engagements, but I was going to just disconnect my sways, and drive my EGT as it sits, but with my 15" graspics. (or a set of 14" blizzaks, i haven't decided yet).

I think that longer springs would be preferable to stiffer springs, as you can get more travel and absorb more shock that way.

Just make sure to somehow shield your pulleys, so you dont throw rocks and crap up in there and throw belts...

I ran my EGT (now rally car) in a rally cross, with stock springs and Tokico struts, the car handled fine, easy to drive. Most rally crosses aren't very rough, so even if you leave the swaybars on, it'll do fine. Big thing would be grip, then handling second. Rally cars aren't set-up like road racing, the springs are stiff, but only about double of factory rates, with the most travel possible. Road racing can have springs as much as 4 times as stiff or more. A set of EGT springs would be the way to go, on a budget.

Advance sells a TRW progressive rate spring that would be good for your wagon. About $120 for a set.

He could just disconnect an endlink then re-connect it when he's done rallycrossing. And yeah most rallycrosses aren't rougn, I think the EGT springs would be perfect.

For the swaybars, if you really want to dissable or get rid of them, then give it a try. The rear one should come off pretty easy. As for the front, on my rally car, I just took the passenger side end link out. Leaving the bar and drivers side end link in place.
