    Performance drivebelt

The mechanic told me that the engine is simply twisted around. that means the belt is always going to be a little contorted which means most belts will tear apart eventually. He said fixing the squealing drive belt problem is pretty much impossible with my budget. He recommended experimenting with a performance drive belt that might last longer.

    Can anyone think of any?

but i guess you have to ask first why its "destroying" your belt? and why would your engine be "twisted"?

The engine area naturally twists around due to age and heat. No car is the exact same shape over time.

If I, or anyone, knew exactly why the belt is being destroyed then it would've been fixed by now. The fact is that the 97' Protege is infamous for the mysterious squealing belt. There's been enough posts about it unanswered.

My sister's 1.6L 99' Protege have the exact same problem, after around 70,000 miles it started destroying belts (alternator) every few month or so and I have replaced it like 6 times. Few mechanics had a look at it and don't know what is wrong with it .

I think it have something to do with the alternator pulley, for me it doesn't look aligned with the water pump and the crank also the squeling appears to come from there and you can see some debris around it. A strange thing about it that it also start to squeak when you turn the A/C on ( A/C uses another belt) and yes I made sure that the alternator one was the one making noise cause I ran the car with the A/C belt only and it didn't squeak also after few thousand miles it still looks new compared to the alternator one.

Any suggestions will be of great help.
