1992 Ultra Blue Metallic EGT - The 'scort with no name - crap>reliable daily>rallycross prep>stage rally
Featured in Rally Gearbox Magazine 3/1/11
"There's a hierarchy of insanity in motor sports. Normal people think all racers are crazy. Folks who race sedans think people in open-wheel cars are nuts. People who race cars of any kind think motorcycle racers are absolutely off theirs meds. But there's one group that everyone agrees is made up of the most extreme, the most daring, and absolutely craziest people in racing - rally racers."

Man those are the purplest wheels I ever did see..'90 AWD Protege, full GTR drivetrain swap, ~320 whp daily driver, RIP, and
'90 AWD Protege, yet another GTR swap, Open class rallycar with a Toyota GT4 gearbox swap, thus crossing the line between hobby and mental illness. And a Brabus E55 K8, removing all doubt.

Not digging the clearances of the water lines going to the wastegate... I need to find some banjos for it.
Pretty happy with the placement of the intake and it's lack of movement when clamped up. Time to finish this off with some paint!

Also found an issue, good thing I saved the p5 drivers side axle.. EGT driver side axle vs P5 drivers side axle. EGT axle is quite a bit shorter. Jeff, you said you were using EGT axles correct? I remember you saying you were having issues with them or something.

Nice short intake run. I could not believe how much if a difference it makes, having the right size tubeing in front of the coldside. Retune levels of difference upsizing a quarter inch. Putting a coldair box round your filter might be a good idea though.'90 AWD Protege, full GTR drivetrain swap, ~320 whp daily driver, RIP, and

when it is all in the car and the engine is mounted using the 1.6 pass side mount and the 2.0FS trans mount from what i remember it fit in the wheel assemblies fine. I also had plenty of room to fully thread the axle bolts. I even used the EGT ABS rings to drive my speedo as MSP does not use speedo gear for speedo it uses abs. i think the FS drivetrain sits higher up (if that makes sense) which is why the axle is longer as it goes more at an angle rather than straight into the hub. I could be wrong but it ended up working for years for me.
I did have issues with braking an axles when I was using my custom mounts, but it may also have been related to beating the heck out of the car with 20+ years old ford escort axles and having the engine closer to the firewall than with the oem mount setup. not sure if you remember but I had a 4-1 turbo manifold being used with an n/a setup and i was revving all the way to 8000rpm and shifting at WOT so the drivetrain took quite a beating. still hard to believe it revved that high and made decent power, but with no MAF, a 4-1 shorty, catless 3" exhaust (from my old FSDET) and MS tuning it pulled great in the top..just made no power anywhere else. still it was alot of fun racing with my buddies svt focus on the backroads while I slowly pieced together my turbo setups.
i did have to remake my crossmember like 10 times to get things "right" or as close to right as I could get it. From what i recall you already made yours. I also had some washers between the engine mounts/mounting points to lower the engine a bit for lining things up. it took like 100 tries to get the engine/trans at the right height and right angle for everything to fit good.
basically you try something, drive it for a few days, start to think and get a feel that maybe this/that needs to be a little higher/lower. maybe the front of the crossmember needs to be higher up a few mm or maybe the rear needs to go up/down to get a better angle etc. or maybe you want the ass end of the drivetrain up a bit, so you slip a couple washers on the threads of the rear mount so that the rear sits higher up etc. either way I was always tinkering with something on the car whether it was the piping, wiring, hoses exhaust etc so I didnt mind making the adjustments here and there while I was already working on other stuff to get it right (or as close to right as I know anyways). i did replace my wheel assemblies at one point, but they were already in rough shape before I started the swap as I had botched a couple wheel bearing installs over the years of it FSDET life.
then once I was happy with the way everything felt/drove I made a new crossmember that worked perfect on the first try since I knew how to angle the engine, height of the engine off the ground, angle of crossmembers etc.
It was very simple and cost very little to weld it up in my garage. 1 part ran horizontally in back for the rear trans mount, the other ran north/south for the front trans mount and I connected it to the rear horizontal bar.
also pay alot attention to your shifter and how it is lined up in the cabin as well if you are using the still using the stock FS linkage. try to keep the shifter in as close to stock position as possible if you can (IE neutral it is positioned right in the middle, a few MM off and the shifter will be off and you will have a hard time getting into certain gears. I had a MSP so the shifter might be a bit different than the mp5 on the underside the car, not too sure.
its been quite a while since I have even though much about it. the swap was a never ending nightmare/loveaffair/bestTimeEver I am still glad I did it. I learned alot.Last edited by vtec-this; 02-06-2015, 01:28 PM.
