i was looking at the FS-ZE aswell. will a new one cost about the same as just putting in a new 1.6L?

Another 2.0L. It's the best you'll get for that car.

Go for the fs20ze, because it come from the factory with 170 whp instead of 130 in the American version (no cat in the headers, piston heads with more compression, better cams, and better air intake manifold) but I would forge the internals to get strenth enough to do serious modz (high power turbo) other engine swaps would require modifying the engine bay and that could get expensive. You could pretty much swap what ever you can afford and fit in the bay. I saw a magazine that had a garage that only sells one car, a Miata with a 5.0 mustang engine swaped into it, thats all they make and sell, lots of work done there and it COST. Your best bet is the fs20ze. good luck.

Found a cardomain page thats pretty cool, It has a Miata with a 302 V8 conversion done, not by the mentioned garage but its still fresh

this guy oosirkooo is spreading bad info all over the place....he's already been banned from pclub..FS-ZE will never get the stated 170 CRANK hp without the ECU or a standalone...hardly cost effective either compared to adding a turbo, even including the cost of replacing the 2.0 FS-DE...they arent quite a dime a dozen but I have seen FS-DE's on ebay and car-part.com as cheap as $500.....
