    Engine question

Hi everyone,im new here and this is my first post.
    Im also new to Mazda's

Anyways I have a question I hope someone could help me with.
I just picked up an 01 Protege LX with a 2.0,guy I bought it from said the motor was replaced a few years ago.Is there a way to tell by casting marks or physical appearance which motor is in the car? I suspect they replaced the original with the 1.6

    Thanks

    Welcome to CP.

In answer to your question, go to:

Look at the photos in post #1. Note the very short wire from #2 spark plug coil pack to #3 plug, and the much longer wire from #4 spark plug coil pack to #1 spark plug If this is what your plug wires look like, you have the FS-DE 2.0 L engine.

The two spark plug wires on the 1.6 L engine are almost the same length. The #1 wire is 400.5 mm (15.77") long and the #2 wire is 360.5 mm (14.19") long (NGK's figures). If this is your configuration then you have the ZM-DE 1.6 L engine.

    Happy Motoring!
