i have a 1999 protege, ive been hearing a strange rotating noise coming from the pulley area, it sounds like its coming from the center pulley. i mean its not a clicking or scraping sound. it just doesnt sound quite right. could it be the tensioner pulley behind the timing cover? if so do i have to take the timing belt off? the timing belt appears to be in good nic.

Heres what I would suggest. You will need a Mechanics Stethoscope. You can get one a Harbor Freight for like $5. Use that to poke around and see where the noise is coming from. Then take a closer look at that part to determine areas of failure. DIY Repair or Pay Repair, Get it looked at Now. Pulley disasters will leave you stranded.
