I have a 1999 protege with a 1.6zm-de with around 150k miles on the odometer. Recently the engine has developed a tick I am assuming it needs a valve adjustment. Does this sound correct? Does this engine have adjustable valves or could the tick be something else? I don't think it has hydraulic lifters but I am not sure? Can someone please advise me on checking valve lash? I have a couple sets of feeler gauges and have adjusted valves on dirtbikes quite a few times so I am somewhat familiar with the concept. I just have never dealt with shims.I think auto zone has a how to write up on adjusting the valves on this engine and it mentions a special tool and shims does this sound correct? Is the Mazda dealer the only source of the tools and shims?
