    Tire Size

    Hello,

I have an '03 Protege LX. It came with 195/55/15 OEM tires. For the past few winters I have used 195/55/15 winter tires and the car drives great in the snow.

I have a set of 195/60/15 winter tires from our second car that we just traded in. Wondering if I can use these tires on the Protege? Has anyone successfully interchanged tire size on their Protege?

    Thanks,
    Nova Scotia

Yeah you should be fine. I ran 205/55/16 with no problems. Just be sure your rim fits well to begin with. We have plenty of room for tires.

they'll work, there's no doubt there... but your speedo and odometer will not show he correct info. The left over tires frm your other car are smaller in total diameter, so the wheel spins faster for the same actual speed of the car... your gauge will show something like 102 km/h when you're actually going 100 km/h.

also, and this is not fun, the odometer will go up slightly faster too... so in reality, for every 100 kms you drive, your odo will add 102 kms. Not that big a deal if you're only usinig these tires in winter... or even in the long run... since no one really cares that the odometer reads 102,000 instead of 100,000, the car has no more value by then anyways!! hahhah.

but anyhow, you wanted an answer, you got a PRECISE answer. I've used 195-50-15 on a car that originally had 195-55-15 before, no issues...

        Thanks

Thanks for the feedback. I'll give the larger tires a go.

the larger 195/60/R15 tires should have a total height when mounted on the rim from ground to top of tire of 24.2in. as Where the 195/55/R15 tires should have a total height when mounted of 23.4in so you can use some math i guess and determine how far the speedo will be off. and Shouldnt it be slower with a bigger tire not faster?

somewhere on the internet there is a calculater to calculate the ammount your speedo will be off.

The reference is right on this forum as a matter of fact. It's even a sticky. All you have to do is search.

yeah, actually, I must have been on drugs that day when I posted, I somehow said the complete reverse of what I meant..

a smaller tire (195/55/15) will make the wheels turn faster and make your speedo show faster than actual speed, and ODO go up faster.

a larger tire (195/60/15) will make your speedo show slower than actual speed and your ODO go up slower.

what I mixed up is what you originally have and what you'r putting on. You'll be putting on LARGER tires with the 60 profiles... thus slowing down your speedo and ODO. But just slightly... nothing to really be concerned with... but watch your speed, cuz if you're going 120km/h on the highway and pass a cop car, he'll stop you cuz you're actually driving closer to 130km/h.
