car was having difficulty starting yesterday...and at last would not turn-over...could it be the battery?...i did notice some corrosion around the top plug? If so, how much does a battery replacement cost new/used?

Unhook the battery cables, clean them and terminals ( preferably with a wire brush). Hook back up, get a jump to see if it will start. Then let idle, disconnect positive with the vehicle running. If it stalls its the alternator, if it doesnt it was the battery. But let it idle for awhile, then shut off and restart. No start its the battery.
