    clearing ABS codes

My wife's 2000 Protege has both the ABS and brake lights on so I jumped the connector and got three codes, 13, 14, and 48. It says both rear sensors are bad. I find it odd that both can go bad at the same time so I tried clearing the codes by pressing the brake pedal quickly 10 times. This does not work. I tried a similar method http://codes.rennacs.com/plugins/MazdaABS/ERASING.php and this did not work either. I pulled the battery connector and left it sit for a while and again it did not work. So what is the magic way of clearing the codes?

I'd like to test the sensors themselves but the connectors are hidden behind the plastic panel under the rear seats. I have the shop manual and the pinout for the main ABS module under the battery. That looks easier to get at than the sensors themselves. If they are bad I'll just splice the wire behind the rubber grommet.
