of course you can
i installed a 3.85 final drive from an escort SPI when i put my quaife in. the only issue is that you will HAVE to use a kia sephia transmission case - the secondary shaft is a bit longer in the later g-series (kia, spi, zx2, KL v6, bj protege, etc etc).Escort GTR -- 11.87 @ 117.6 mph -- 320 HP / 325 Ft. Hey guys,
I am not to in touch with transmission stuff, I am slowly learning. I know the basics of how they work. But when I'm on the interstate doing 70 I don't like to be sitting at almost 3500 rps. and since I don't have an interior cause my cars going to get painted soon. Its really loud and noticable. Plus when I build my engine and its turbo, I think that I will be starting to boost between 3 and 3500 rps. how can I make it so that the rps are lower in fifth gear. is that the final drive that you guys are talking about. sorry If I sould really stupid.
Also with longer gears you lose torq right? and I read here and a couple of other places that the kia trans housing is stronger than a reagular protege trans. I want to build a trans thats worth a crap, so it doesn't break. Really I'm just looking for suggestions and any help from guys that actually know this stuff. I can help with interior wiring, body work, painting and some engine stuff. but not trans yet.
Thanks a bunch guys. 2002 PROTEGES RULE.

find out what your stock 5th gear ratio is. if its anything other than .717 (could be .75, .795) then grab a .717 from a 97+ escort sohc. that will drop your highway rpms significantly.Escort GTR -- 11.87 @ 117.6 mph -- 320 HP / 325 Ft. Lbs. @ 23 PSI

IMO grabbing one from an escort LX (97+) in the junkyard is your best bet. you dont even have to pull the trans to remove 5th.Escort GTR -- 11.87 @ 117.6 mph -- 320 HP / 325 Ft. Lbs. @ 23 PSI

I finally got a reply back from AUS about the PAR gears. They'll take 4-6 weeks to make (don't faint yet) so I'll have a gearbox assembled with stock gears for testing purposes. Since the LSD uses bolts for the ring gear that will make it easy to swap over to the PAR box once those goodies show up.
So, by the end of this week I should have the gearbox dropped off at a shop for the install and I hope to be on a dragstrip by the end of this month.'90 Mazda 323 - V6 KLDE, supercharged, right-hand drive, build log
