FS: 1993 Protege LX $800 OBO

I have here a nice clean Protege LX with select performance modifications. This was my girlfriend's car through college and it was treated well. It runs but it is not perfect

    Notice:
    • This vehicle smokes quite a bit on start-up, and it uses oil.
    • This vehicle has Virginia exempt odometer reading.

EDIT: I am in Charlottesville Virginia

Here's what makes this car worth buying:
    • Bronzeoil shifter bushings
    • ACT street clutch
    • Lightweight early style MX3 seats (I can swap in late style ones if you want!!!)
    • Clean interior.
    • Ford Escort ZX2 15" alloy wheels
    • Recently installed Kuhmo Ecsta AST tires
    • New factory-style exhaust (even has new genuine Mazda muffler with factory chrome tips)
    • Fairly recent new headlights, all exterior lights are in great shape
    • eBay cone filter adapter (makes working on the engine much easier)
    • Sunroof works
    • Power windows work
    • Power locks work
    • Power mirrors work
    • Car features courtesy package with reading lights/clock/tilt wheel
    • This vehicle DOES have a valid Virginia safety inspection until end of May 2008 and it is titled in Virginia with no liens against it. Presently it is not insured or registered.

This is a perfect car for a BPT swap!!! It already has the performance clutch, shifter, seats, and tires to make the car an absolute blast to drive. I have too many project cars, so I have to stop working on this LX and reduce the number of them.

Please PM me for high resolution photos, they are too big to attach. I have attached one with my name on a banner as required by the Classifieds Rules.

$800 OBO: I can DELIVER this vehicle after signed Bill of Sale/Title for the 2008 IRS mileage rate of $0.505 per driven mile; prepaid.

EDIT #2: In light of post #2 of this thread, I have to append that I would like to avoid delivering out of state. Mainly towing laws, interstate commerce laws, and just the mess of it all. I'm more than happy to facilitate shipping and it would be cheaper for long distances than I can provide anyways. Please consider this.

      To be sure; I'll repeat

      Notice:
      • This vehicle has Virginia exempt odometer reading.
      • This vehicle smokes quite a bit on start-up, and it uses oil.

The chassis odometer is stuck and has been for years. The trip odometer is not stuck and I used it to maintain some sort of maintenance schedule. The vehicle is already titled as having exempt mileage as required by Virginia law. I'd rather not give the false reading as it's legally irrelevant to the sale - I haven't a clue what it could be. The condition, apart from the smoking engine, is good but not perfect. If we don't sell we might just have to repair it for her to drive again (she loves the car - I don't really have the time though )

Delivery to Biloxi, MS... I was thinking someone in the state might want me to just hook it up to the truck and haul it over to their place. If it's alright I will edit my advertisement to reflect that (yikes).

But I seriously will work with a shipping company if you'd like to have the vehicle shipped to MS (ask for lots of photos first!) - I've done it twice the in the past and it worked out well. Only conditions would be that I would accept payment, bill of sale, and transfer title before the vehicle so much as budges; and also YOU must find the shipping company you like so I'm free of any potential drama. I'll help as much as I can to aid you and your shipping company.

Hey, any idea why she smokes and if she'd make a trip up to NY from Virginia?

I'm not entirely sure why the vehicle smokes but I know it is oil and not coolant (vehicle did not lose coolant when I was driving it often). What I do know is that when I was driving it, it only smoked when the engine was cold. As the coolant temperature rose, the smoke would clear out - usually this only occurred in the morning when it sat overnight. I don't have any diagnostics to lend that would be useful beyond that since I never had a chance to spend time on it. The smoke is embarassingly visible, but only when it's cold.

On the interstate the car seemed quite fine. Suspension an steering are just fine, we routinely aligned it every other year. I drove the vehicle to Florida and back, it made it fine (A/C was cold and it got awesome mileage ). I drove it as recently as two weeks ago but it is no longer registered or insured (but it is titled with no liens). I am not sure I would do so without a plan B, but it is a viable vehicle that should run at interstate speeds. We stopped driving it only because we didn't want to aggrivate (fumigate) the neighbors and I have a new job that simply leaves me no time for toys anymore.

I always recommend towing unfamilar cars when traveling long distance, but personally I have bought several cars from out of state and driven them home. This vehicle has plenty of goodies that make it unique, I have tried to place a fair price on it for a quick sale (considering the upgrades it's a bargain).

Valve guide seals would be a safe bet.

But as soon as I admit that I might believe something like that people tend to hold the seller to it But yes, a hot engine that burns clean and good even compression tests might reflect that (I forgot to mention the peak compression appears to be fine and even across all four cylinders).

The car does run and everything seems to work - it just smokes and I don't want to deal with it. Given the other nice modifications and the loving care this car has recieved I'm sure someone will want it. I'd just like it gone sooner than later!

                  $800, come and get it.

nerd racing, this seems like a really good deal for you. a good shape lx, needs minimal engine work, great price. I wish I was closer and needed another car, as this is a really nice dd.
No car! I soldz it. Now I have a truck. I like it, but apparently it has a hard time keeping up with a slightly modified 4WD protege with half the hp. Neat.

                      Definitely a steal!

                      Bump for a clean car.

Well there are one or two small dents and a tear in the headliner. The car has a small spot of rust on the driver side door - nothing major. Window motor on the driver front window is slow but works, as is typical of these cars. Light for the HVAC controls has a loose wire so they intermittently go out then come back on. Fortunately the HVAC controls, and the A/C system, worked flawlessly when I parked it. That's about it.

Admittedly I can't think of all too much more than bugged me. Carpet is clean; and the door panels, dashboard, trim panels, all unbroken and armor-alled to a shine (frequently people thought I was kidding when I told them how old the car was). It's a nice old car that will fix up beautifully for someone who just spends some time and a few bucks. I tried to be meticulous even when I couldn't afford it, but now that I can afford it I don't have the time!

I'll post more photos Friday since I am getting interest from folks outside the state. I want anyone who comes to Charlottesville to be completely un-surprised when they see it. I do not expect this car will last long at this price. We all know how much the performance parts in this car cost new, I believe this is a good asking price for a quick sale and I am glad to see it is a realistic estimate through the replies of other forum members.

I figured I should add a photo to show how it smokes, this is also a combination of as COLD and HUMID day, but it's about what it does. Not too pleasant for the neighbors. I hope it's an easy fix! I forgot to mention earlier, the front windshield was replaced recently also!

This vehicle will be sold with 6"x9" speakers deck-mounted in the rear, and aftermarket coaxial speakers in the front Kenwood, all. Factory headunit is in excellent condition. I didn't clip the harness so you're all set for whatever you want to put in. I did, however, install oxygen free untinned speaker cables with the factory stereo connections. What a difference!!! I'm keeping my headunit since another vehicle's stereo just died the other day and I need it (the joy of cars, I tell you!) The Sony Xplōd line of headunit amplifiers sounds particularly nice with these speakers, IMO...

Note the straightness of the body by the reflection of the trees. Also, the rubber strip from the front passenger side door is in the trunk. It started to peel back, and I removed it before it got lost.

                            Still $800, I think that's still a bargain

How much oil does it use between oil changes?
