I could use some help on how to install the shifter cables for my GTR transmission. My friend looked it over and said he thinks i have to cross the cables between the shifter and the trans. However I looked at the workshop manuals and the illistrations seem to indicate that the right cable goes through the firewall to the top shifter point and the left cable goes through the firewall to the lower side shifter point so which is correct? not sure if it matters i am pretty sure my actual shifter and linkage are from a 323 gtx bf

you will need a BG linkage... i know jeff needed to get an AWD protege linkage when he swapped a BG drivetrain into his BF.Escort GTR -- 11.87 @ 117.6 mph -- 320 HP / 325 Ft. Lbs. @ 23 PSI

OK. the driver side cable goes to the top of the trans and the pax side cable goes to the arm at the back of the trans, closest to the firewall. There's no crossover from the shifter through the firewall. I don't think BF cables will work with the gtr box so I bet you'll need a set of bpt cables.'90 AWD Protege, full GTR drivetrain swap, ~320 whp daily driver, RIP, and
'90 AWD Protege, yet another GTR swap, Open class rallycar with a Toyota GT4 gearbox swap, thus crossing the line between hobby and mental illness. And a Brabus E55 K8, removing all doubt.

I think the reason for that is because of the pin size on the transmission levers, I think functionally they're the same. I've only half-seen some photos, though, not actually looked at a BF shifter setup personally.
I believe the back-and-forth cable (passenger side at the shifter, I think) goes to the top pin on the transmission, and the side to side cable goes to the one facing sideways.
I'm not near my 4WD right now otherwise I'd go check it out for ya.
**EDIT** Lol, Jay posted when I was still typing.

ok so here is a picture showing what i'm asking does the red cable marked a go to the top shifter point i drew or the side one i drew and then does the blue cable marked b go to the top or side ones?
if the driver side one (A) goes to the top and the passenger goe to the side one (B) then they do have to cross one anotherIn the Garage

The pax side cable goes to the one you marked as "side", the driver side cable goes to the one you marked "top". So yeah they cross each other, in the engine bay.'90 AWD Protege, full GTR drivetrain swap, ~320 whp daily driver, RIP, and

The bf cables are better quality cause they have adjustable ends to take the slack out. However they will be to short if using them on the bg awd tranny cause the point where the linkage mounts is farther twords the side of the tranny. I took the bg cables from the trannny into the car, cut the ends off on them, threaded them with a die and screwed on the adjustable end from the bf shifter cables. Best of both worlds now they are adjustable and I was able to use the nice shifter rebuild kit from corksport making it all very stiff"See that car, in the 80's that car was deadly." so the 1990 AWD protege cables are longer? with the bf ones i have are strange one cable is long enough even when the shifter is in the stock location but the other one only reaches when i move the shifter about 4 inches towards the dash. so is my best option to try and find 1990 AWD cables or to try and find another set of the bf ones and swap out the short one for a long one?
Also if the bf ones are shorter than the bg ones then how can you put the inner part of the cables from the bf inside of the cables for the bg?In the Garage

Find bg shifter cables. Both the bg and bg cables have one cable that is longer, the longer cable goes to the farther point on the trans and u need a set not 2 of one side"See that car, in the 80's that car was deadly." Random man to his son while passing the GTX in a parking lot

i think both of my bushings are the same size i don't see one that is smaller than the other i'll measure them when i get home today
323driver are you saying the BF and BG cables are the same length?
I did measure the lengths from mounting point to mounting point on the bf cables last nigh though and found the long one was about 36 inches and the short one was about 22 inches so there is at least a 4 inch difference between the two cablesLast edited by projectmx; 04-30-2009, 08:31 AM.In the Garage

No, 323driver is saying you can keep your shifter. But the cables need to be swapped out.'90 AWD Protege, full GTR drivetrain swap, ~320 whp daily driver, RIP, and
