    Air to water intercooler?

Has anybody used one? I know it's supposed to be more complicated, but I don't think it's that bad. I'm beginning to think that it might be okay for my application.

Otherwise, I need to find an intercooler core that's a good size and have the end tanks welded on that I want. 2" inlet 2.5" outlet, going straight out.

Not too complicated, you need the AWIC, a water tank, a water pump, a small radiator, some hoses... that's about it. The big pro with air/water IC's is that water can absorb 4 or 5 times as much heat as air... the con is that it takes longer for water to lose that heat

They're great if you're working with a cramped engine bay, because the actual IC can be located under the hood and the rest of the components can be spread out, no large IC pipes to worry about routing You can even mount the resevoir in the trunk if space is a big problem. I've heard of people boxing DSM SMIC's and converting them to AWIC's, sometimes you can find used OEM AWIC's on eBay from GMC Typhoon/Syclone's or older Subaru's and Toyota's.

Yeah I see some old Subaru ones... spearco ones are pricey, even used.

A proper 2.5" outlet would make it easier though.

I wonder if there is a site that just sells kits.

How much are you looking to spend? Because the actual intercooler is only about half the cost usually... all that associated junk really adds up quick.

I guess here is an example system, though it's for a Pontiac:

              Pricey but maybe worth it??

look up the AWIC for teh thunderbird coupe. after all they do share the VJ series turbo.

oh and alot of ppl cheat with ice in the resevior at the track to help dissipate that heat quicker.

and that thing on ebay is very ugly.
The T3 BP MX-3 conversion has begun, and is taking forever & will kill me.

                        Ugly in what way?

Anyways I changed my mind. With a little research air to water isn't that great for what I want.

I wouldn't trade my air to water when i'm at the drag strip but on the street it's not that great even with a rad in front the water always get hot. But when you're at the strip and drop ice in the tub it's crazy how cold it becomes, there's always some condensation on the external surface.

AWIC's don't have to be pretty like a FMIC... you can't see them unless you open the hood. They're perfect for sleepers

Yeah, but I take my Protege out onto the track for 30 minutes at a time... can't stop and put in ice.
