    Hello from Chicago

My name is Tony and I just purchased a beat up 93 Protege DX. Im a bit of a car nut for most of my life. Ive owned all sorts of cars and trucks over the years. I recently sold my 83 Bronco for something a little more fuel efficient. Initially I was looking for an EGT, but those cars are becoming quite hard to find around these parts. My buddy had a 91 EGT that I absolutely loved. It was the first car I ever drove and also my first stick shift experience. Since I couldnt find one, I started looking for anything 4 cylinder and stick.

I happened to stumble across this Protege on Craigslist a few weeks ago. The seller was only asking $600 so I figured Id go take a look. The car aint pretty by a long shot. It started out gray but the passenger side was side swiped by a truck and was replaced with red doors & front fender. The rear pass quarter is done & the trunk leaks. The car currently has a 1.8 SOHC with about 194k on it. It runs excellent but the clutch is on its way out. The interior looks like a painter had the car at one time as there are quite a few paint drips on the back seats. A big beach towel should take care of that. It needs a radio & a clock (this one dont hold memory). Taking all of this into consideration, I offered the guy 350 and he took it. I figure most of the stuff is mostly regular maintenance & nothing a day at the junkyard wont take care of.

The shifter bushings are long gone, but I already ordered a full set of ES shifter bushings from an Escort perfomance site (ZX something or other). I really have no interest in swapping a DOHC motor in this car quite yet since it runs so good. Ive got a 91 Sentra SE-R in the garage waiting for me to drop the newly acquired SR20DET in it, so I just have the Protege as my DD for now.

My current plans for the car are this:

    Rattle can it black
Full tune up & timing belt change (have the parts waiting to be put on)
Replace the shifter bushings (waiting for them to get here)
A set of tires and maybe a set of EGT slicer rims
    Drive it till it wont....

I figure once this motor dies, I'll be on the look out for a BPT to make it the ultimate sleeper......

Really? It seems that I cant swing a dead cat without hitting a half a dozen. These are some damn good cars though. I bought mine about a month ago & Ive already put 3k on it. Only things Ive had to do are change the struts & tires.
