    New 1991 Mazda 323 owner need help on forum

    Hello, I got a 91 323 and swapped engine. Drove this today. Now I have a transmission issue. What forum should I direct this to?

    what is your transmission issue? What engine did you swap in to the 323?

          Hi all, engine is now 1.8L 16v SOHC motor from junkyard 1993 Protoge. Runs very well, produces a lot of power. Original engine was 1.6l - water damage head gasket blown.

          Transmission issue as follows: Put in drive, goes into 2nd gear. Low gear engages 1st gear. Have to manually go from 1 to 2. 2-3 does NOT work. Can drive car, but no higher than about 60 (as if you were constantly passing people). Speedometer does not function. Is this related?

            yes speedo not working is related... the ecu for the transmission needs to see a speedo reading in order to time when it shifts.. with out that its fail safed in 2nd gear only..
