    New BP festiva here

Well since everytime i looked up something on the bp it came here i decided to join. I just finished swap into my festiva but now i think i need new rings and i figure while im in there i should just get some higher comp pistons. What is out there for these? The compression is 180-175-175-178

this is my out car its a 2005 zx3 focus with FS stage 2 turbo kit so the festiva is going to be the fun NA car.

if your compression numbers are that high and you burn oil, it could be that your valve guides/seals are bad...

High compression and burning oil is typically not the rings. If you had bad rings, your compression would be a bit lower. I would pull the head off, have it shaved, and have new Valve seals/guides installed and replace/check your HLA's while your in there. Slap a Cometic Headgasket on there, and call it good.

I think belfab, wiseco and je make 11:1 pistons. Look up pistons for a 1.8 miata when looking. Also if you want to keep it oem, the 2002 miata came with 10:1 stock. Just drop in. . I have an extra set of vitron valve seals if you ned them. Throw me an offer.

bad idea, if you do that than you will have ring problems seen it many times. what happens is if you rebuild the head than it will seal better and push past the rings causing smoke . if you rebuild the head rebuild the whole thing.

the valves seems to be sealing fine since his compression numbers are right where they should be. personally i'd just replace the valve seals you can do it without even pulling the head off.

well thanks all for the info. Are the valve seals a common problem on these engines? Also it smokes at high rpms and if you engine break the give it gas.

it definitely sounds like valve stem seals, but it could also (maybe) be bad oil rings. your compression rings are definitely still doing their job though. i'm not sure how to tell if the oil rings are bad aside from replacing the valve stem seals and seeing if it helps or not.

one very simple thing to check is your PCV system.. replace the pcv valve its self and make sure you have it all hooked up right....

also another easy thing to check is oil level... make sure its not over full...

Valve seals are pretty commen.. Usually with valve seals you'll burn the most on oil on first start up after sitting, light load higher rpm or decell...

Could be an oil control ring problem but I would expect your other rings to be gumming up as well, so I would expect to see worse compression then what you have... its definatly a possability though..

leakdown test, put air through the cylinder at tdc and listen to where it is comming out of... if you hear air coming out of the oil cap its rings, the exhaust or intake valves.

his compression rings are sealing though, based on his compression test. i dont see how a leakdown test could check the oil rings.

PCV valve is a good idea. thats one thing to get at the mazda dealer though... the parts store ones are CRAP. the oil burning on my old beater EGT got even worse when i replaced my old (original maybe?) OE one with a parts store one.

i already changed the pcv valve also the engine did sit for a year maybe at a auto wreaker so would it be more likely that the seals cracked? Could i add somthing to the oild like that thick stop smoke struff and if it stops then it could be valve seals or say screw it and take cover off and replace them. We also had one sticking lifter on first start but its gotten alot quieter now.
