    New 323 GTX owner

Hi All. I just purchased this GTX and brought it home last night. These are pictures fresh from this morning.

I plan on pretty much just restoring the GTX to nice, comfy daily driver status. It will get some reliability upgrades as well as some 21st century upgrades (megasquirt 3) along with a custom turbo setup built by me...eventually. Right now I just want to swap in the good transmission it came with and drive it.

For fun, I have a turbo miata. The miata is 98% built by me. I built the turbo manifold, downpipe and a buddy built the exhaust in trade for a transmission. I built the megasquirt and tuned it myself as well as many others i've built for friends. I have plenty of megasquirt knowledge to share so i will try to help out when I can.

Welcome welcome. I'm gonna be putting the same turbo on my BPT swapped GTX when the manifold gets finished.

And your BOV should be fine.. I ran an SSQV on my black car for years with a VAF.

Ya, I dont know. I'll probably just throw my bosch bypass on there anyway. I get my turbo noise fix from the miata =P

You seem to be a resident GTX expert, what is my best option for rear shocks going to be? The fronts seem to be fine.

Edit: wait, have you been responding to my intro email on the 323gtx list?

The 626 struts and spacers (washers) that Marc suggested are gonna be the best bolt on replacement. My set up is beyond custom. There's also some decent rally and track set ups you can get.

        And yes, yes I have.

You can also use Subaru STI suspension, a lot easier to source and takes minimal work to do. Swap the top hats over (they're compatible), trim the hub mount a tad and drill new holds to line up with the hub, done!

The vent and hole where the other vent was are pretty clear in one of those pics. Also, i'm not taking a bunch of pics of my neighbors volvo. They already think i'm weird enough for bringing home the GTX =P

It will likely get its bath tomorrow if the weather holds up for it. Work and School keep me pretty busy most days of the week. Only going to have 2-3 days per week to work on it unfortunately

So I played with the GTX today. I haven't given it a bath yet. Was tired and lazy. I just plugged a battery in it and got it running. It smokes a lot which has me worried. I know these tend to burn up pistions in #3. Going to compression check it this weekend. Was really hoping this motor would get me through until next summer when I build a new one.

The exhaust mani is cracked really bad. A spare came with the car but it also has a crack in the same spot, just not as bad. I think i'm just going to end up building another one since I have most of what i'd need to do so in the garage already (flanges and whatnot). I think I might change from the VJ line of turbos as well and use the T2 family that i'm familiar with. I dont think a slightly larger turbo will make much difference to the ECU and it is going to be running megasquirt eventually this winter anyway.

I put it in gear just to see what kind of shape the bad tranny was really in. It moves for a few feet in 1st, then it seems like when I turn it starts grinding and wont transfer power into forward kinetic energy, just noise. Reverse seems to work every single time, no matter what. I'm wondering if its just first gear alone. This makes me want to take in a few broken transmissions and see if I can make a good one out of them.

Can a mod move this over to the works log section? I would kind of like to just continue my project tracking in this thread.
