    2002 Protege

    Hello Club Members,

My name is Hector and I just bought a 2002 Mazda Protege for my daughters 16th birthday 6 weeks ago. When I first bought the car it was idling high so I took it to a shop and they discovered it had a loose screw and tightened it. Cost $107.00 US. Code P0421 came up 1 day later and got an estimate from same shop for 3400.00 US to fix it. Recommended replacing two O2 sensors and two catalytic converters. Cats are very expensive in CA. I'm hoping to gain the knowledge I need from the members on this forum to be able to fix the car properly but without having to pay through the nose to get it done. I'm also looking for a vacuum hose diagram to figure out where a loose hose connected to a canister on the firewall goes. Car runs OK for now.

Thanks for looking and I look forward to reading replies.

BTW - Lissa is my daughter.

    Welcome to CP.

You can find a vacuum hose diagram at:

P0421: Warm-up catalyst system efficiency below threshold

Possible Cause (according to the Factory Service Manual):
    Catalytic convertor deterioration or malfunction
    Exhaust gas leakage
Loose O2 sensor, front or rear
    O2 sensor (front) malfunction

Be careful of this repair shop. It sounds like they may be trying to rip you off. It could be something as simple, and as cheap, as an O2 replacement. It's unlikely that all these systems would have failed at once.

    Happy Motoring!

If the diagram Goldstar linked doesn't help you take a picture of the vacuum hose you are referring to. There are a few members here who are very familiar with your car and can probably sort it out.
