    Problems with air intakes

I don't know if this is true, but I've heard from a few different people that sometimes putting an air intake on your car can cause problems. They say that if it isn't in the right location, there won't be enough air flow to it and it will cause the engine to compensate with fuel...so i guess that means it will run rich.

Has anyone ever heard of this or had problems with it? I just thought that it was weird that the few people i talked to all said the same thing. I was going to get an accord short ram intake, but I'm afraid it will do exactly this. I'm just trying to protect my gas milage...

I haven't ever had any problems like that with an intake, but my friend hydro locked the engine on his parents eclipse after installing an intake and driving through a small puddle..

      do it right, never worry.

      2 words: Rally Cars.
No car! I soldz it. Now I have a truck. I like it, but apparently it has a hard time keeping up with a slightly modified 4WD protege with half the hp. Neat.

the only way you'll have problems with hydro locking is if you drive through puddles deep enough to submurge the filter. so either that eclipse intake hung retardedly low, or your friend was lying about the depth of the puddle

Partially false. At least it assumes the driver right out of the picture.

First off in my experience with much larger engines, I haven't been able to find a location I could put the air filter that could cause this issue. I think you're just fine with a Protege that's not in an obviously stupid location (such as, inside a very tight wheelwell or a perforated plastic shopping bag).

The engine will have to respond to loading as best it can. It also operates on relatively different control mechanisms at idle versus normal driving. So assuming driving only, the engine cares most about loading and engine speed to meter fuel. A restrictive intake would likely mean the driver would likely try to load up the engine more to accelerate, which would decrease economy. If the drive rode along the same points on the fuel maps they would simply notice a slower vehicle.

Seriously, in a pulsatile air intake system the dimensions and shape of the air tube determine more on efficiency than the air filter location. It seems like people undestand tuned length runners on exhaust manifolds since they are so commonly discussed, but so few people discuss tuned length intake manifolds.

You know who did make a tuned intake manifold for the stock BG? Mazda
          .

Putting and intake on your car isn't going to really effect your gas mileage or improve your power. It'll make your car sound cooler, and clean up your engine bay, that's about it.

I don't care if you have a cold air intake, a short ram intake, a factory intake, or a rubber ducky, you shouldn't be driving through big puddles anyways.

big puddles are for rally, not street racing. Leave it to the pros
