You *might* be able to do it, but it would be stupid expensive. It'd also require a ton of fab work and making everything fit would be a bitch. Keep in mind, in the 4WD 323s/Proteges they have a transverse engine up front, not longitudinal. You can't exactly just turn it all around and expect it to all slot in nicely. That being said, it could be possible to rig something up that will work, but the cost would most likely be far too much, and the added weight would have a fairly dire effect on the handling of the car. However, Audi used to have longitudinal AWD systems in their cars (A4, for example). That might be a tad easier to rig up, since everything's already pointed in the right direction. Also, the 1.8t they used to use is good for around 350 hp, and the 2.7 litre twin turbo V6 I've seen go to 800 before. A lot less would be better (once rode in an S4 with about 420 whp; it was....brisk). The trick there would be making it fit; say hello to custom mounts and a lot of wiring. This may sound crazy, but it's possible someone's even done this before. I've seen a 1UZ Lexus V8 stuffed in a Miata's nose before, so who knows what else is out there?

That's either a separate differential, or the transaxle in the case of a FWD based AWD car.

Glad to see I'm not the only one coming up with crazy Frankenstein cars. I once dreamed up a midengined twin turbo V6 323, Renault Clio style, for god's sake. So, no, you're not mentally challenged for thinking V6 AWD Miata, just a little deranged. That's okay, though, because deep down inside we all are. Though, now that you've gotten me all intrigued, I'm going to have to research this more myself. Thanks. If I find anything you'll be the first to know.

There's only one miata swap that makes sense and it starts with LS. Doing anything awd with a miata will involve total front suspension revision, thus negating the Miata-ness.

You want deranged? A buddy of mine and I got as far as primitive blueprints and parts sources to take his Saab 96 and put a Buick aluminum 215 in the trunk. We woulda left the V4 in front, and be able to run the rear engine when needed....I think it was for the best that neither of us had any money at the time.

I dunno 'bout the ONLY swap that makes sense... the Miatabusa looks nifty, and the Hartley V8 as well....400HP @ 10,000rpm, 245 ft-lbs torque @ 7500 rpm, 200 lbs.

10krpms will make that short-ratioed miata box be not TOO short anymore!

But, I gotta say, I was looking through the latest Flyin' Miata catalog the other day when it came in the mail, and I LIKE the LS engine in a miata!!

You win the Lunacy Award for the month, I think. You've got me beat at any rate. My hat is off to you, sir.

With all these engine options being thrown around, it sounds like the Miata is the new Beetle. Seems like damn near anything will fit. Oh, and since we're tossing out swap ideas anyway, why not a rotary? 13B-REW...that'd be a lot of fun til it went boom.

Miata awd can be done with the donor car being a Cosworth Escort or Sierra chassis.. super simple drivetrain, reliable, tons of power options, and the only bug to work out is the front hub issue.. Nothing to difficult for an engineer and a cnc machine.. Just depends on how deep your wallet is for such projects that make no sense.. First you have to ask is WHY???
