so i bought this:

it came in today. the bearings have no endplay, and its nice and clean, but it has like ****in .080"+ of side to side play. no signs of oil leaks, and the wheels dont hit the housings. but damn, thats a lot of play . in the auction it says the bearings are tight!

.08 - sleeve bearing turbos always have play even if in great shape unlike the ballbearing ones.

so just rebuild it. shouldn't be that expensive and then you can have a nice turbo for another build for cheaper then a new one.

i know sleeve bearing turbos always have play... but it seems like a LOT of play. WAY more than any of the 3 IHI turbos i sold. do garretts tend to have a lot of play?

my garrett has that much play, and no sign of unusual wear to it ( its in amillion pieces for rebuild right now)

ya it was a pretty good deal . its from an early 80s 300zx, and it came with a .48 standard 5 bolt hotside, instead of the weird ass 7 bolt nissan flanged .63 hotside.

ok so i exhaggerated at first.

i pushed the turbine to one side, and measured the clearance from the nut to the housing. then pushed it to the other side and measured the clearance in the same spot. i turned it and tried it in a few spots. what i came up with is a side play of ~0.040 inches.
