    computer issue

    ibm t40
    1.7 ghz pentium M
    1.2 gb ram
    xp pro

all of a sudden it has been going really slow...and running REALLY hot. if i open up the task manager, the process called "System" running under SYSTEM is using 99% CPU all the time.

it does this even after i reboot.

    any ideas?

Jon check to see if its SVCHOST.EXE that is taking up the 99% CPU.... there is usually more than one instance of it running but if one is taking the 99% You may need to reinstall windows.

      its not SVCHOST

in task manager, the process is called "System" under the "image name" column. it only uses 220k of memory, all the time.

i searched online a bit and the only conclusive thing i found was one guy said to boot with no battery in... i did that and its working fine right now... i'm going to reboot in a moment with the battery back in we'll see what happens.

shine a light thru the ven to the fan on the bottom, and check the airflow thru the vent...

my call? the heat exchanger is covered in hair and dust and isnt moving enough air to cool it. the proccesses read 99% because the Pentium M proccessor is designed to throttle back the speed when its too hot or low on power

EDIT, 70% of the time, if you open system properties the proccessor with read lower than the actual speed.
