    Build a new computer

Dad's old build is going on 5 years old and needs updating. I haven't been following the tech to close but see that most application point toward entertainment center style builds. This will be strictly desktop with emphasis on email and light browsing. It needs to last and it needs to be reliable. Dad is no computer tech so any problems are not an option.

The HDD and case will be used from the previous build. I'm also using the old PSU since it was replaced with an Antec not long after the first build. Edited for RAM

    AMD Athlon II X2 240 Regor 2.8GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM3 65W Dual-Core Processor ADX240OCGQBOX

    Crucial Ballistix 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model BL2KIT25664BN1608

I thought about going with something with an on board or on die GPU but I'm just not up on those advances.

you only need 4 gigs of ram. I'm running 7 on my comp at with a high res dual screen setup and i multitask all the damn time. I have never not had enough ram.

Agreed. I'm only running 4 gigs on my build and it does just fine.

If you're wanting something reliable and not wanting to drop precious coin on new hardware I have a Athlon AM3 mobo with 4gb DDR2 ram and Phenom 64x2 processor. I used it mostly for browsing, music and light gaming for about 6 months. I know it would suit your father's needs if he just wants email/browsing. I would let it go for cheap + shipping.
I live my life a quarter pounder at a time. And for those 500 calories or more, I'm free. I need FRIES! Two of them. The big ones. Oh, and I need them tonight. You're lucky the double shot of BBQ sauce didn't blow the seam on your nugget box. There she is, 2 pounds of pure beef. My dad ate it in 9.0 seconds flat. Check it out, it's like this. If I lose, winner takes my happy meal. But if I win, I take the burger and the toy. To some people, that's more important.

I have one of these drives in my person rig and I like it. I couldn't find one on sale when I replaced his 80 gig IDE drive so went with the 320GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s. It holds all his favorite music and the upgraded MOBO will make use of the 3.0 stuff. It should be fine.

If the price is right, I could pick it up for the daughters build. I'd like to have something DDR3 though, as if he needs it. Shoot me a PM with details.

I have RMA'ed 12 of those WD blue drives in the past 7-8 months, all from different batches. All of them in different enviroments. All gave SMART errors and had a bunch of dead sectors within a few months of use.

It could be I had a round of bad luck but I figured you could be the judge on that.

                Yikes!
I've never had a problem with WD. That's just crazy.

it probably all depends on the particular model of hard drive. In the past i bought seagates because of all i had read about how seagates are the ****, and they are amazing etc and that Western Digitals had a lot of problems. My old WD's and my friends old WD's certainly did. So that's what i bought. But when it came time to buy a new 1TB HD a while ago, looking at the reviews for the seagates and there was a huge percentage of bad reviews. The Western Digitals had all great reviews. So I got a WD and have had great experience with it so far.

Ive had to RMA one of the three WD in our new computers at work because of the "smart" feature.

If I ever get some cash, Id love to finish my I7 build. Hopefully by that time the technology will be in the same place. =\

After spending the day at Dad's and farting around with his computer, I decided he's just fine. A fresh round of updates and virus scans and he's all new again. The rig is old for sure but it's still working well.

So, no upgrades. At least not yet.
