BPower, that's a smart move. I hate to see guys buy a big bike as a first ride.

I used to have a '94 Ducati 906 SS and now have a Trek 4500. no more motorcycles for me as long as I live in Florida. While stopped at a red light with no place to go some @$$ drove into the back of me doing 60 about 8 years ago. It messed me up for life. back problems, no spleen, lost part of my liver. Florida is a very dangerous place to ride, no matter ho w good you are the other motorists pay no mind to bikers. [/rant]

What other bikes would you guys suggest for a beginner? I am looking into the Yamaha R6 but I fear that it'll be too fast of a bike for a beginner like me. I've driven sports bikes a few times in the past, but am very much a newbie.

I'll let you know (hopefully) after this weekend if a katana 600 is a good bike for a super-n00b like me

Katana's are nice because they're heavy (read: stable), so the ride is less twitchy for n00bs. The riding position is also comfertable, not like a gixxer or a r6 (you can only ride for about an hour at a time max with one of those bikes), so it's better for longer rides (they are classed as a 'sport-tourer').

I don't want to spread too much katana-propaganda around here, but it's the only bike I have much knowledge of. I've heard all of those other bikes names thrown around though when a 'beginners bike' thread has been thrown up on the boards, and those guys know a lot more than I do.

highly recommend a sv650 for beginner bike.
no plastics, cheap insurance, no maint, decent engine characteristics and very little money to purchase.

Like Dean said, a Sv650 is a great possibility. It's a good learner bike, and very capable as you gain experience. Very respected in the twisties.
