This may sadden some of you but I thought I would share.
I sold my 94 protégé to my mom about 3 years ago. In those 2 years it has been grazed by a semi, hit by a deer and sat on by a horse so needless to say its need a few body part replacements.
I bought it in 2004 after it had rear ended another car so it had to have extensive front end repair. Frame rails straightened, new core support, etc
Since 2004 it has needed NOTHING done to it other than oil changes and a tune up once. So this year I decided to try to find another 90-94 protégé for a daily driver at a decent price.
I located one on CL that "only" needed a RF axle shaft for $400 I drive the 2hrs to go look at it with a trailer. It is a DX with auto tranny. The transmission fluid is completely black and it has 186k on it. It starts up and runs smooth but the HOLD light for the tranny keeps flashing. this concerns me but I cant test it because the axle. But it does have a good body, brand new tires, alt, starter and ball joints. I tell the guy I'll give him $200 because the tranny concerns me. He accepts and we head to the title office to transfer the title.
He hands the clerk his title and it is signed by the previous owner as well as notarized. But it had a letter that was scratched out before his name on the back so they wouldn't touch it. I tell him to track the previous owner down and get a new title, and ill come back and buy it.
He calls me a week later and said "she moved to WV" so I told him without a title I had no interest in the car for $200 but I could use it for parts for my moms if the price was right. He stands firm on $200
Another week passes and he tells me if I come and remove it I can HAVE it, so I said OK.
I went and picked it up and pulled all the body panels but the 2 drivers doors as they were the only thing good on my moms.
I found a replacement axle in the trunk and then I got an idea.
Since all I needed was to install the axle and it would drive I could waste this thing at a tough truck event and then pull the drive train out of it. I put the axle in and drove it around the neighbor hood to see how it ran. Tranny only had 2nd gear. To the garage for some "paint" it went
There were only two cars out of 91 entries that ran We ran one right after another. The first car got stuck on the 2nd jump on the track.
The track was CRAZY. every bump in it was at least 2feet tall and steep. Not a track designed for 2wd trucks, or cars of any sort. There were 4wd's getting Hung up in the frame twisters.
On the second jump, I bent the front end so bad I put a hole int he oil pan with t he right lower control arm bolt. At the time I didn't know thats what happened but there was allot of smoke and an oil pressure light on int he dash. Stayed on the throttle hard and made it 3/4 of the way around the track to the 20ft table top, and launched it, completely cleared that thing and bent the front end 4" into the air and disconnected the coil wire, had to get hauled off the track. I didn't get to finish the race but the crowd cheers were worth it.
Popped the coil wire back on when I figured out what happened and started to back it off the trailer and the motor locked up. So I never unloaded it, just pulled the axles, alt and starter and sent ti tot he scrap yard.
If you are wondering what a "tough truck race" is basically they set up a short motox track for vehicles and the faster time through wins.
I didn't get any video for this run but here is some video of a mercury sable that I ran 2 years ago so you Can get an idea. I took 8th outof nearly 100 in the sable. Up until the tiem that I stopped running in the protege I had a faster time than my cousin who took 3rd. May have won it in a car if it would ahve held togather.
