The NJ State Tire Fee is just another way to steal even more money from NJ residents. Other than that, I don't know its purpose. It's separate from, and in addition to, the state sales tax.

      From the Authorizing Statute:
For transactions on or after August 1, 2004, new legislation imposes a fee of $1.50 on the sale of new tires, including new tires that are component parts of a new or used motor vehicle which is either sold or leased, if the transaction is subject to sales tax pursuant to the New Jersey Sales and Use Tax Act. The $1.50 Motor Vehicle Tire Fee is imposed per tire, including the spare tire sold as part of a motor vehicle. The tire fee also applies to sales of new tires in connection with a repair or maintenance service. The tire fee does not apply to recapped tires.

The tire fee must be collected from the purchaser by thye retail vendor, and in general, must be separately stated on any bill, invoice, receipt, or similar document. The $1.50 Tire Fee is not subject to New Jersey sales or use tax.

Since I always buy tires online, this is the first time I was charged, or even became aware of this Tire Fee theft.

      Happy Motoring!

GHEY!!!! I'm glad DE doesn't have this! $4 for a 70 cent valve stem is a little outrageous...but its better then leaving the old one on there. Did they happen to tell you what the disposal fee was although you kept the old tire? We are required by law to charge $2 hazardzous disposal, but I have heard of some shops charging $5+.

I think the disposal fee was $4 but I'm not absolutely sure.

Local shops here charge a disposal fee for the tires and then sell the scrap tires for even more revenue. I always tell them that I will keep my tires and I recycle them in a local pond or fire pit (just kidding I take them to the local waste collection facility which separates used tires.)

I've even had a shop offer to take them without a disposal fee I indulged on the "free" disposal to save myself some time..
I live my life a quarter pounder at a time. And for those 500 calories or more, I'm free. I need FRIES! Two of them. The big ones. Oh, and I need them tonight. You're lucky the double shot of BBQ sauce didn't blow the seam on your nugget box. There she is, 2 pounds of pure beef. My dad ate it in 9.0 seconds flat. Check it out, it's like this. If I lose, winner takes my happy meal. But if I win, I take the burger and the toy. To some people, that's more important.
